The Shocking Truth About Cruise Ship Illnesses

There have been several stories in the news recently about Norovirus and similar gastrointestinal illnesses striking cruise ship passengers. But the media fails to mention that – with over 13 million persons cruising every year – the percentage of cruise passengers getting sick with the virus is actually very low.

THE SHOCKING TRUTH – In fact, less than 1% of passengers sailing out of a US port (one in every 3,600 people) has actually been affected by norovirus.  And did you know that only cruise ships are required to report every incidence of gastrointestinal illness? Nowhere else in the U.S. (including hotels) are such viruses a reportable illness.

CDC Facts: In most cases of norovirus reported on cruise ships, the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has determined that the incidents were sourced from passengers bringing the illness onboard – not from food or water sources. According to the chief of the CDC Vessel Sanitation program, the standard by which cruise ships are held for sanitation is the highest in the world.

CLIA REPORT: In response to fears and questions about gastrointestinal illnesses on ships, CLIA (Cruise Lines International  Association) has just posted detailed information regarding health practices and cruise line procedures.  In the report, CLIA lists the steps that cruise lines are taking to prevent gastrointestinal illness and maintain a healthy ship environment, and describes enhanced sanitation practices designed to keep passengers healthy during their cruise.

We would like to point out a few facts mentioned in the  CLIA report: the historic incidence of illness such as Norovirus aboard cruise ships is low and according to U.S. Centers for Disease Conrol and Prevention, the vast majority of outbreaks occur in land-based settings.
